A comprehensive search and recovery operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing sailing vessels loaded with aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Rescue Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and search planes to find the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine total personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The vessels had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a representative for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50k operations cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with remarks from several officials emphasizing the complex nature of diplomatic ties.

In response to recent comments, a senior Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
