California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

He has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and pushing a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to pull federal funds from the state and warned eliminating the power to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," he declared, after a recent fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.

The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's statement countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's study showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
