Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen ā known as a scientist and civil rights advocate ā was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
āI told her my depression might last for years,ā Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
āFor a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,ā she confessed. āA month laterā¦ I had to hang upā¦ because I could not speak through my tears.ā
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement ā including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage ā was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the āfog of grief has started to liftā, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support helped save her. āYour support rescued me,ā she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
