Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fans

Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also is on the table.

Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
