The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular program wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
