The English Team to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they achieve the relatively straightforward passage for a competition hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the national team for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.

England are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, should they win Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Competition Kickoff and Rally

The championship was inaugurated at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they entered the venue by approximately 50 protesters, who demanded the Israeli team to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.

Signs were displayed with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Timeline

The first match of the European Championship will be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a game that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.

It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.

All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the qualification path.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and The North London arena round out the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches played at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“It will be a championship for the fans and a festival of everything we cherish about the game – its fervor and ability to bring people together.”

More than three million tickets, a record for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
