The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
