The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
