Ukrainian Forces Hit Moscow's Oil Refinery Using UK-supplied Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles.
In a significant military action, Kyiv's forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, according to the country's military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the location. This represents not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary providers of fuel products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive talks with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on possible ways to end the war.
“It was a really good conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, of course, the timeline.”
Legal Crackdown Within Russia
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a court in Russia has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in prison.
This case are said to be based on an article Udaltsov shared backing another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in defiance.
International Detainee Case
The Kremlin indicated it is engaged with French officials regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and allegedly facing additional accusations of spying.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all state resources mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his liberation as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the detention or expulsion of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, following its reconstruction almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
